Minister advocates healthy lifestyles

This message was delivered on Saturday at Empangeni High School's 62nd anniversary celebrations

MINISTER of Health, Dr Zweli Mkhize, has urged high school learners to keep themselves safe from contracting communicable diseases, but if they did get infected, they should visit their nearest clinic for assistance without delay.

This message was delivered on Saturday at Empangeni High School’s 62nd anniversary celebrations.

He told the learners that there were about seven million people living with HIV, which was a worrying factor for the government.

‘In addition, every year we find about 220 000 more people infected with TB,’ he said.

‘You need to learn about these diseases so that you can educate others and help prevent infections.’

Dr Mkhize said many countries have dealt effectively with these diseases and do not have such challenges.

He further advocated healthy lifestyles among South Africans to prevent illnesses such as heart attacks and diabetes.
