NHI to benefit all citizens

This was said by KZN Department of Health Deputy Director General, Mfowethu Zungu, during a media engagement session held on Friday at Queen Nandi Regional Hospital

NATIONAL Health Insurance (NHI) is a financing system that will ensure that all South African citizens are provided with essential health care, regardless of their financial status.

This was said by KZN Department of Health Deputy Director General, Mfowethu Zungu, during a media engagement session held on Friday at Queen Nandi Regional Hospital.

Zungu explained that a pilot project had been conducted in three KZN districts – Mgungundlovu, Amajuba and Umzinyathi – and the results were positive.

‘All other provinces conducted similar pilot projects in one district.

‘The NHI bill has been taken to parliament for approval and the new system is expected to be implemented in 2026.

‘The aims of NHI is to improve access to quality health services for all South Africans, irrespective of whether they are employed or not, and to ensure that every South African receives equal medical health care irrespective of their affordability.

‘The government is planning to stop subsidising medical aid members, especially government workers and private healthcare service providers, and use that money to fund the NHI,’ said Zungu.

Zungu said all healthcare service providers will need to register before they can claim from the NHI.

He added that asylum seekers and those who are in the country for a holiday or work will not benefit from the NHI, but in emergency cases they will be provided with first aid only.
