Drivers must be more responsible, says MEC
The Women’s Day long weekend saw more than 30 deaths on KZN’s roads
LAWLESSNESS on KZN’s roads is the main contributing factor to the province’s high number of fatal car accidents.
This is according to Transport MEC Mxolisi Kaunda after the recent long weekend saw more than 30 road fatalities across KZN.
On Saturday, seven people were killed in an accident involving a taxi in Pomeroy, near Dundee.
The taxi was reportedly transporting young girls to an event in Durban.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the driver lost control of the taxi and it veered into a ditch.
Six passengers died on scene while nine people were injured, of which one – a child – later died in hospital.
An accident on Sunday claimed five lives after a Toyota Corolla and a Toyota Quantum collided in Folweni, south of Durban.
All occupants of the Corolla died on scene, while the 16 Quantum passengers were transported to hospital for medical treatment.
In Belgrade, two light motor vehicles collided head-on, killing all five occupants, including the driver, of one of the vehicles.
The driver of the second vehicle also died while three passengers were taken to a nearby hospital.
In Louwsburg on Sunday, 50 people were involved in an accident when the bus in which they were travelling overturned.
According to reports, the driver lost control of the bus.
Of the 50 passengers, six were killed, nine sustained critical injuries, 16 sustained serious injuries and the rest only minor injuries.
Meanwhile on Zululand’s roads, a motorcyclist was killed after the driver of a sedan reportedly executed a U-turn on the N2 just north of Mtubatuba.
‘It is unfortunate that over the long weekend we lost more than 30 lives in different accidents around the province,’ said Kaunda.
‘Most crashes can be avoided if people abide by the rules of the road.
‘Forensic experts have been dispatched to investigate the cause of these fatal crashes.
‘We have asked the police to intensify law enforcement operations, and focus on drinking and driving, speeding and unroadworthy vehicles.
‘Let us all obey road rules so we can save lives.’
