Fight blown out of proportion

What was described on social media to sound as though violent taxi warfare had erupted at the Engen petrol station in Veldenvlei on Thursday night, turned out to be nothing more than a skirmish between passengers of one taxi

Initial eyewitness reports stated that the occupants of three taxis had become involved in a physical fight, hitting each other with whips and other weapons.

On reviewing the video footage, the garage owner was unable to make out any violence between the three taxis’ drivers or occupants.

However, staff on duty at the time of the incident said that it took place around the side of the petrol station, out of CCTV range, and not at the  filler points.

They said it was the occupants of one taxi who are presumed to have been inside the taxi when a fight erupted and the driver subsequently pulled into the petrol station car park.

While parked on the premises, the occupants of the taxi piled out and had a fight, which was reportedly resolved relatively quickly.

All passengers then returned to the taxi and the driver drove off.

A patrolling security officer who was called to the scene, attended, but said that by the time he arrived, the fight had been resolved.

No damage was caused to the petrol station. There were reportedly no injuries and no cases of assault were opened at the police station.
