MONTHS of emotional trauma for families of eight young schoolboy sexual assault victims came to an end last week when former support teacher at Veldenvlei Primary School, James Millin was sentenced to eight years behind bars with two years suspended.
The 22-year-old pleaded guilty to all counts of inappropriately touching the boys while he was employed at the school.
In court appearances leading up to sentencing, Millin told his probation officer he had difficulty speaking about the incidents, was suffering from depression and was taking anti-depressants.
He said he knew what he did was wrong, but did not know why he did it and tried to seek help after being charged.

The parents of one of the victims said they were relieved the matter had been finalised and justice had been served. ‘It was a very long and emotional process and had a massive impact on all the children, as well as our families.
‘As parents had a lot of support from the community but are extremely disappointed in Veldenvlei Primary for not giving us any support during this difficult time.’
Community members took to social media platforms to offer support to the victims and their families and express their sentiments after the sentencing.
‘These crimes brought much trauma for numerous children and families.
‘I’m not entirely happy with the sentencing but I’m sure he will pay for his crimes,’ said one community member.
