Temporary houses to be built for Slovo community in KwaMbonambi

This comes after the mayor of uMfolozi Local Municipality, Cllr Simangaliso Mgenge held a productive feedback meeting with residents

SLOVO residents at KwaMbonambi were relieved last week after the announcement of the construction company which will build RDP houses in their area.

This comes after the mayor of uMfolozi Local Municipality, Cllr Simangaliso Mgenge held a productive feedback meeting with residents.

According to ward 2 councillor Amose Mtshali, the Slovo community are living in informal shacks after being left out from the first 500 people who qualified to get RDP houses.

‘The budget was for the first 500 who were listed, but residents were told that there was a second phase planned.

‘The next 500 were supposed to be built in October last year, but this did not happen.

‘The waiting period for those houses was too long and I was not surprised when I saw them take to the roads in protest, because they were supposed to be in their houses in May this year.’

Cllr Simangaliso Mgenge told the Zululand Observer that the community of Slovo were told at the meeting that the houses would be built.

‘On Sunday we are going to introduce the construction company which will build 300 temporary houses, while we are still waiting for a budget for 2021 when another 500 proper RDP houses will be built.

‘I understand that the shacks our people are living in at this stage are not in a good condition.

‘We tried to speed up the process of building those houses and we have had listened to our people’s complaints, and it’s time for us to deliver,’ said Mgenge.

He said the project is expected to begin early in August, after a final meeting that would be held on Sunday where the mayor will introduce the construction company.
