Generosity overflowed at Madiba lines

DONATIONS of clothing, blankets, soft toys and even non perishable food overflowed at the Hang out with Madiba wash lines erected across the city by businesses, community groups, charities and schools.
The initiative driven by the Zululand Observer newspaper and its charity arm, Do I Care Enough(DICE) was a resounding success as community members visited the lines from 7.30 to midday at various venues in Richards Bay, Empangeni and Mtunzini to deliver their donations for charity.
This year construction equipment supplier in Richards Bay, Eazi Access sponsored the equipment to erect the wash lines in Richards Bay and sold wors rolls at the site to raise funds for DICE.

While the community pegged their clothing donations on the line opposite the Richards Bay Civic Centre, Rotary Club of Richards Bay arranged for beneficiaries to receive wheelchairs and all the collected items to be transported to Empangeni by their service provider E.P.X. Courier Services.
Rotary handed over 11 wheelchairs to beneficiaries, who have been on the waiting list at Nawe Zifunze Disable Centre (Nazidi) in Mzingazi.

Nazidi Project Supervisor Bongani Gonya welcomed the donation of new wheelchairs and thanked Rotary for their ongoing support to the centre.
‘We are grateful to all the community groups and businesses that support our programmes and projects as we are always in need of new donors.

‘One of the wheelchair recipient’s Zakhele Sibiya had both his legs amputated, is now unable to work but still assists us with the repairs of wheelchairs at the centre.
‘He started a vegetable garden to earn an income from his fresh produce but unfortunately his wheelchair was damaged by sand.

‘He is receiving a new wheel chair but his old one will be repaired at the centre and used for any emergencies or given to patients in the interim who are on the waiting list.
‘No wheelchair is thrown away, they are taken to the centre where they are repaired and reused,’ said Gonya.
Members of the public who would like to support Nazidi can contact Bongani on 083 4724579.
