
THE R618 between Mtubatuba and Hlabisa has, since Monday, been plagued by violent protests in which angry members of the community have turned on police officers.
Hlabisa residents are unable to travel to Mtubatuba and vice versa.
Earlier this morning (Thursday), protesters made their way to Mtubatuba Municipality, leaving much smouldering debris and destruction in their wake.
Seven arrests were made as residents attempted to block the N2 at Nkodibe crossing in Mtubatuba, while a further two protesters were arrested for public violence near the Mtubatuba Municipality building.
Police remain on high alert and urge motorists not to use the R618 between Mtubatuba and Hlabisa.
uMkhanyakude District Mayor Solomon Mkhombo is expected in the area to address protesters about their water-related concerns.
