Jobless duo opens car wash
Mandlazini's Cebo (29) and Jack (35) have started a car wash that has not only created a livelihood for them but also for other unemployed people in the area
WITH high levels of unemployment and a number of industries shedding jobs, Cebo Masondo and Jack Langa of Mandlazini have secured their own source of income.
Cebo (29) and Jack (35) have started a car wash that has not only created a livelihood for them but also for other unemployed people in the area.
‘Instead of sitting at home all day doing nothing, we started a car wash because it was one business that did not require funding or start-up capital.
‘All we needed was to build a shelter and have buckets, water and soap,’ said Cebo.
The pair started the car wash on an open space at the entrance of Mandlazini.
Cebo, who matriculated at Lizwi High School in 2002 said this business has given him something productive to do while helping to provide for his family.
‘Although we are not making much at the moment, it is enough to be able to buy bread for my family and I am able to make a contribution for other household necessities,’ he said.
They currently fetch water from their homes, using buckets to wash the cars.
‘Most of the time it is just the two us but when we get more than three cars, we are assisted by other young people in the area who are also unemployed,’ Jack said.
He said some of the money they make on a daily basis they put towards buying equipment for the business.
‘We hope in the near future we will be able to secure proper space with a shelter, electricity and running water so we don’t have to walk back and forth to fetch water at home,’ he said.
