Rehabilitation support for KZN flood victims

Zikalala said the damage caused by severe floods, which left 71 people dead and hundreds destitute, is estimated at R3.5-billion.

THE National Department of Human Settlements has released funding for housing rehabilitation to support flood victims in Ugu, King Cetshwayo and eThekwini districts.
This was announced by KZN Premier Sihle Zikalala during the State of the Province Address last week.
Zikalala said the damage caused by severe floods, which left 71 people dead and hundreds destitute, is estimated at R3.5-billion.
‘The province had to react to deal with the effects of floods and declared Harry Gwala, Ilembe, eThekwini Metro, uMkhanyakude, King Cetshwayo and Ugu district municipalities as disaster areas and implemented disaster relief measures to support all those affected.
‘We acknowledge the challenges that eThekwini has in relation to land.
‘Negotiations are underway to secure sites for transitional housing, especially for those that need to be relocated,’ the premier said.
He said the recent disasters have also highlighted the need for improved disaster management coordination.
‘We undertake to improve our disaster response measures, including establishing effective and functional early warning systems.
‘We will achieve this by fast-tracking the installation of communication and early warning systems at the provincial disaster management centre.
‘Therefore, all 11 district disaster management centres will be supported to remain functional.’
