Action over bus shelters

Recently, the municipality’s infrastructure portfolio committee enquired as to whether new bus shelters are still being erected while new designs are being planned

BUS shelters in the City remain in a dismal state while government struggles with the upkeep.

Recently, the municipality’s infrastructure portfolio committee enquired as to whether new bus shelters are still being erected while new designs are being planned.

Bus shelters are used around the region every day by hundreds of commuters and informal traders, who sometimes wait under them for hours at a time.

The committee heard that two new bus shelters were recently erected in eNseleni and Port Durnford but they required clarity as to which government department was responsible for the upkeep.

It was found that the maintenance function lies with the City’s Building and Structures unit but that there was no budget or resources to maintain the existing structures.

The committee resolved to draw up an inventory in which all bridges and bus structures which fall under their jurisdiction would be listed, as a way forward in addressing the issue of maintenance.
