Kick your habit to help understand substance addiction

South Africa’s drug consumption is twice the global average

TO promote Drug Awareness Week, SANCA (SA National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence) is encouraging everyone to participate in its annual Kick Your Habit campaign.

Running from 23-29 June, the seven day challenge calls on participants to give up one thing they cannot live without.

Whether it’s chocolate, fizzy drinks, social media or coffee, whatever that one thing is that makes your day a little brighter, why not kick it for just seven days.

The Kick Your Habit campaign is aimed at raising awareness at the complexities surrounding addiction and dependence, and seeks to build awareness through experience.

By giving up one habit that gives you pleasure, you can experience what a substance dependent may go through during treatment.

With experience comes education, and this is the ultimate aim of the campaign.

Participants are encouraged to keep a daily log which could even be an online blog, of their progress, including cravings and physical and emotional challenges while experiencing withdrawals.

The public participation campaign also aims to confront the stigma attached to substance abuse, with the understanding that anyone can become an addict.
