Residents welcome horse patrols

AS part of a crime combating drive, the SAPS Mounted Police Unit was deployed in eSikhaleni to tackle activities such as mugging and drug dealing.
On Tuesday, five members of the unit together with the eSikhaleni Crime Prevention Unit were on duty at eSikhaleni Shopping Mall, J1 Section and Port Durnford area, doing random stop-and-searches.
Even though they did not make any arrests, shoppers and residents were thrilled to see them in the area.

Residents believe that the joint operations are the only solution to prevent common robberies.
Shopper, Sibusisiwe Ndebele, said horse patrols were the key to controlling crime because criminals easily run away when they see police vans patrolling.
‘It is the best combination because no one can outrun the horses. In most cases, criminals monitor the movement of the police van.

‘They then hide in secluded areas police vans cannot access and resume their activities when the police have gone.
‘We would be happy if these horses were going to be here for a long time,’ said Ndebele.
King Cetshwayo Police Cluster spokesperson, Captain Mbongeni Mdlalose, said the unit has played a significance role in reducing crime in various areas under the district.
‘This unit is capable of chasing suspects; horses are trained to assist officers to execute the arrest. They also attend to serious crime scenes,’ said Mdlalose.
