KZN firefighters kept busy

KZN Working on Fire (WoF) deployed 116 firefighters who attended to 11 veld and forest fires during the week of 20 to 26 May

KZN Working on Fire (WoF) deployed 116 firefighters who attended to 11 veld and forest fires during the week of 20 to 26 May.

KZN was affected by a high danger index, but thanks to prompt responses by firefighters the fires were contained before serious damage could be done to the environment.

Communities affected were in Umngeni, Mbazwana, Manguzi, Ulundi, eShowe and Hluhluwe.

WoF Northern KZN Grounds Opera-tion Manager, Mortas Khambule, said, ‘We have been seeing an increase in fires, especially in the Zululand coastal area.‘Although vegetation is green in the Mbazwana area, temperatures are extremely high, making it favourable for runaway fires.

’Regions such as Ulundi have not had much rainfall and vegetation is very dry. Communities should therefore report fires without delay.

All firefighters remain on high alert and are ready to provide firefighting services to landowners and municipalities.

‘We urge communities and landowners to remain vigilant and not start any unnecessary fires,’ Khambule said.

‘It is also imperative to check the daily fire danger index warnings issued by the SA Weather Service.’
