School pupil transporter under influence

According to police he was arrested and charged for drunk driving and his vehicle was handed over to a family member

A RICHARDS Bay man believed to have been waiting to transport school children in Meerensee on Thursday afternoon was arrested after he was found to be under the influence of alcohol.

The driver, who is a well known local scholar transport service provider, was discovered sleeping in his stationary vehicle by a City of uMhlathuze traffic officer outside a Meerensee school at about 1.45pm, and tested with a breathaliser.

According to police he was arrested and charged for drunk driving and his vehicle was handed over to a family member.

When he appeared in the Richards Bay Magistrate’s Court on Friday, the docket was not enrolled pending further investigation and he was released.

Richards Bay SAPS Communications Officer, Captain Debbie Ferreira, advised parents and guardians who have children transported by private transport service providers, to ensure the drivers have a valid professional driving permit (PDP) and children are secured in their seats.
