Call for visual artists to submit applications

This forms part of the annual ArtbankSA programme that provides artists with a platform for the acquisition of their contemporary artwork

THE Department of Arts and Culture has called on emerging visual artists to submit applications before 12 July for their artwork to be leased or sold to government departments, private companies and private individuals.

This forms part of the annual ArtbankSA programme that provides artists with a platform for the acquisition of their contemporary artwork.

‘The programme is part of the Mzansi Golden Economy (MGE) initiative hosted by the national museum in Bloemfontein.

‘Every year it considers acquiring special pieces of art for its own growing permanent collection,’ the department said.

It was launched in the Free State by Arts and Culture Minister Nathi Mthethwa in 2017 and was subsequently followed by a provincial exhibition launch in Durban.

Artists must meet the following criteria:

• Artists may submit a maximum of five original artworks for consideration.

• Artwork can be submitted in any medium.

• They must have been created by the artist after September, 2018.

• It must be of a superior quality and representative of South African contemporary art.

• The artist or his or her representative will be required to register on the central database system (CSD) and be SARS tax compliant.

• The decision of the acquisition committee will be final and only successful applicants will be contacted about collection and couriering of artwork to the exhibition venue in due course.

A detailed submission form is required with each submission. Forms can be found on the Art Bank of South Africa Facebook page and the national museum website www.nasmus.co.za
