MBADLENI residents took to the streets of Ingwavuma on Monday to demand electricity, clean running water, bursaries for their children and a crèche in the area.
The angry residents blockaded D1842 road in Ward 17, which leads to a local clinic, claiming they have been waiting for too long to get clean water.
Resident, Nhlanhla Mthimkhulu said they were promised clean water by the municipality in 2008, but to date nothing has changed.
‘Since then we have been fighting for water with animals. We are living in a democratic government, but we only hear about development in the media.
‘We are forced to go to the bushes to collect wood to make fire to cook, as we don’t have electricity. We have been neglected for so long,’ he said.
Mthimkhulu said they were promised the installation of electricity last year, but that was hijacked and taken to another ward without their consent.
‘We were not informed why the project was taken away from us. We demand answers.
‘Also, none of our children have benefited from the municipality’s bursaries,’ he said.
Jozini Mayor, Cllr Delani Mabika responded to the protestors and addressed them.
‘The issue of electricity and water belong to the district municipality. We are working with the district to address their grievances,’ said Mabika.
