Water strike is over

Mhlathuze Water employees return to work

THE illegal Mhlathuze Water strike is over and all employees have returned to their water purification plants.

On Monday, scores of the utility’s employees associated with the South African Municipal Workers Union (SAMWU) working at all the region’s water purification plants embarked on the strike, demanding – among others – full-time employment for part time workers.

Residents in many areas were left without water for long periods.

Mhlathuze Water spokesperson, Siyabonga Maphumulo, said today (Thursday) they are pleased that the strike is over and the situation is back to normal.

‘Workers have since returned to their duty stations, and all reservoirs that pump water are showing signs of improvement. Areas that had previously been without water have also had their services restored.

‘Mhlathuze Water would like to thank the public and stakeholders for their understanding during the strike,’ said Maphumulo.
