Many voting stations and access roads were damaged in recent floods
THE rush is on to repair more than 200 voting station venues and their access roads which suffered flood damage over the Easter weekend.
The KZN Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) is working against the clock to ensure all voting stations will be accessible come election day on Wednesday.

‘We are monitoring progress as the affected municipalities undertake the necessary repairs. Where municipalities require external help, we will co-opt the provincial Department of Transport.’
Affected municipalities are widespread and include Zululand areas in uMfolozi, uMhlathuze and Mthonjaneni.
Cogta is also working with the affected municipalities and the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) to facilitate the timeous replacement of all ID documents lost during the floods.
The Department of Home Affairs is issuing temporary ID documents to those who lost theirs.
‘For our part, we have requested municipalities to financially assist all those who cannot afford the application fee for a temporary ID certificate and Home Affairs has been asked to waive the R70 application fee for this document,’ said Dube-Ncube.
‘We have also mobilised municipal councillors to extend their assistance to residents of their wards or areas of deployment.’
