SASSA beneficiaries urged to be vigilant
SASSA has received numerous complaints of cases where beneficiaries have lost their cards, resulting in their social grants being withdrawn fraudulently
THE South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has urged social grant beneficiaries to ensure they protect their payment cards and pin codes.
SASSA has received numerous complaints of cases where beneficiaries have lost their cards, resulting in their social grants being withdrawn fraudulently.
‘Beneficiaries must note that no person can withdraw their money without their consent, unless provided with a pin code and the card.
‘Sharing pin codes with family members or strangers results in loss of social grants payments and undue hardships,’ said SASSA spokesperson, Senzeni Ngubeni.
‘Those who access their social grants at ATMs must ensure that they observe their surroundings and move away if they see any suspicious people lurking around.
‘People should avoid asking assistance from strangers. After the transaction is completed, they must put cash, card and receipt away immediately.
‘Beneficiaries are discouraged to count money at ATMs. They should instead do it later at a safe place and always keep their receipts safe.’
Ngubeni further warned beneficiaries to refrain from writing down their pin codes as it poses a risk should the beneficiary misplace his or her card. He urged old age grant beneficiaries to rather access their grants at post offices.
‘Beneficiaries must not hesitate to report fraud at a police station nearest to them as soon as possible should they suspect wrongdoing.
‘Those seeking more information should call our toll free number 0800 601011 from 8am to 4pm on weekdays.’
