Partial sinking of Richards Bay yacht

After Monday night's heavy rains, a boat was found partially submerged at its moorings at Zululand Yacht Club

AFTER Monday night’s heavy rains, a boat was found partially submerged at its moorings at Zululand Yacht Club.

By mid-morning Echotainment had been righted and was removed from the water.

The boat’s owner hastily made plans to drive to Richards Bay from White River to start investigations into the cause of the incident.

Meanwhile, on Saturday Richards Bay NSRI was called to assist one of the boats participating in the Inhaca-to-Richards Bay yacht race.

According to duty coxwain Jacques Kruger, the yacht was unable to make headway owing to damage sustained to the boom during the night and to motor mechanical failure.

The NSRI rescue craft Spirit of Richards Bay was launched to rendezvous with the yacht which was drifting offshore of Richards Bay.

‘A tow line was rigged and we towed them to their moorings without incident and no further assistance was required,’ said Kruger.

On Friday, NSRI crew while on a routine training session aboard Spirit of Round Table II assisted a Richards Bay Ski Boat Club member whose ski boat had suffered engine failure as the result of a fuel line rupture.

‘On arrival on the scene, in the vicinity of the Richards Bay lighthouse, we set up a tow line and towed the craft without incident to the Ski Boat Club,’ said Kruger.

‘No further assistance was required.’
