KZN blue flag stewards graduate
The young people were equipped with relevant skills for employment in the environmental and tourism sector
Thirty-five beach stewards in KZN who participated in the blue flag training programme received certificates at a graduation ceremony last week.
This programme, which included stewards from Kwadukuza Municipality, ran over 28 months, equipping the youth with relevant skills for employment in the environmental and tourism sector.
The purpose of the programme is to help improve tourism facilities and services offered at 46 blue flag beaches in KwaZulu-Natal, Eastern and Western Cape, as well as 25 pilot sites.
In October last year, six north coast beaches were awarded blue flag pilot status, two in Mandeni and four in KwaDukuza.
‘The value of the blue flag project does not only relate to environmental management and education, but also to economic development and job creation for youth in the conservation and tourism sectors.
‘The blue flag beach stewards improve the services at beaches by providing environmental awareness and actively engaging with visitors, thus promoting sustainable tourism along South Africa’s coastline,’ said Director for Education and Youth of the Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa’s (WESSA), Nontobeko Sibisi.
Deputy Minister for Tourism, Elizabeth Thabethe, encouraged learners to utilise the skills attained not only as a tool to seek employment, but also create entrepreneurial opportunities.
