Grant beneficiaries must safeguard their cards and pin numbers

'Sharing pin codes with families or strangers results in loss of social grants payments and undue hardships,' SASSA said

SOCIAL grant beneficiaries have been warned to safeguard their payment cards and pin codes.

This follows an increase in cases and complaints received by the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) on fraudulent withdrawal of grants.

‘Beneficiaries must note that no person is allowed to withdraw money without the card holder’s consent, unless provided with a pin code and the card.

‘Sharing pin codes with families or strangers results in loss of social grants payments and undue hardships,’ SASSA said.

‘Those who access their social grants at the ATMs must ensure that they observe their surroundings and rather move away if suspicious persons linger in the vicinity.’

‘Beneficiaries must memorise their pin codes and insert cards themselves.

‘They should not ask assistance of strangers. After transactions are completed they must put their cash, cards and receipts away immediately.

‘Beneficiaries are also discouraged from counting money at ATMs and should instead count their money in safe place and always keep their receipt safe,’ the agency said.

For old age grant beneficiaries, SASSA has encouraged pensioners to access their social grants at the nearest South African Post Office.
