THE Empangeni Magistrate’s Court handed down a hefty sentence to a 28-year-old man found guilty of two rapes, housebreaking and attempted murder.
Velenkosini Nhlonipho Mtshali was sentenced to 30 years imprisonment for the crimes committed between 2015 and 2018.
On 8 March last year Mtshali attacked a 14-year-old girl returning home after visiting a shop. He strangled and raped her.

The victim’s brother later found her near the road and took her home.
In a previous incident he attacked a 51-year-old woman on 2 January, 2015. He burgled her house and demanded money, but when she failed to hand over any cash he raped her.
Mtshali was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment for the rape and five years for attempted murder on the young girl, and seven years for rape and three years for housebreaking in the 2015 case.
