City of uMhlathuze warns residents about bogus municipal letter
Several people have reported having received a letter on a seemingly legitimate municipal letterhead about inspection of electricity metering equipment
THE uMhlathuze Municipality has warned residents against giving access to their properties to people posing as municipal workers, but who cannot provide identification.
This after several people reported having received a letter on a seemingly legitimate municipal letterhead about inspection of electricity metering equipment.
The letter states that in terms of council by-laws, the City of uMhlathuze reserves the right to inspect electricity meters at any time.
The letter, which is printed in both English and Zulu, requests the recipient to contact the municipality’s Revenue Protection Department to arrange access to the property within a stipulated time frame.

Should access to the property not be granted, the letter threatens disconnection of the property’s electricity service, which would only be reconnected once an inspection of the meter has been undertaken.
City of uMhlathuze spokesperson, Mdu Ncalane, took to social media to refute the legitimacy of the letter.
‘These letters dated 2 April should be ignored. They were not delivered by municipal officials and the reference to Mr Kanyile is outdated.
‘We have already updated our letters with the new manager’s details.
‘Customers should not allow access to their houses to individuals not driving municipal vehicles and who cannot provide identification.’
