Bulk buying programme to boost emerging businesses

The launch follows several bulk buying roadshows in eThekwini, Amajuba, uMgungundlovu and the King Cetshwayo district

THE newly launched bulk buying facility in Mandeni is expected to not only boost emerging retail businesses in the province, but also transform rural and township economies.

This facility, which was opened on Tuesday, has been described as the ultimate solution for small traders who had previously been denied access to goods at affordable prices.

‘They will now be able to place orders using the latest paperless technology from the state-of-the-art warehouse in Mandeni and have their goods delivered at no cost to their shops,’ said KZN MEC for Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs, Sihle Zikalala.

The launch follows several bulk buying roadshows in eThekwini, Amajuba, uMgungundlovu and the King Cetshwayo district.

Zikalala said this is part of ongoing efforts to support enterprise development, which is key in the fight against poverty, unemployment and inequality.

The initiative is being pioneered by the MEC’s department in partnership with the Ithala Development Finance Corporation.

It will enable traders across KZN to play a significant role in the mainstream wholesale and retail sectors.

‘The programme promotes collective bargaining by township and rural retail and wholesale enterprises, to collectively buy directly from manufacturers or their representative suppliers or distributors.

‘It involves central buying, warehousing and distribution of fast moving consumer goods, both perishable and non-perishable,’ Zikalala said.

According to research, South Africa’s food market is worth about R500-billion, with formal retailers accounting for 68% of this amount.

Zikalala said the programme’s ultimate aim is to cut out the middlemen, thereby ensuring that retailers enjoy economies of scale.
