Club rugby season starts off with a bang

THE 2019 Stewart Shield club rugby league officially kicked off at the weekend, with defending champions Hluhluwe stamping down their authority early with a comprehensive 50-7 win over Richards Bay.

Hluhluwe scored eight tries to one on Friday evening at home, which placed the squad at the top of the table after round one.

The Mtubatuba vs eShowe game scheduled for Friday evening in Mtubatuba was called off owing to extreme weather and will be played at the end of the season.

Empangeni’s showed good form when they beat Pongola 19-3 in their Saturday game at Mick Kelly Park.

Empangeni finished second in the Bozas Cup competition in eShowe and beat Vryheid at the Pongola rugby tournament, giving them a good winning percentage early on in the season.
