THE Zululand Observer offices were filled with lights, cameras and (more) action (than usual) this week as a film crew moved in to record interviews and footage for a documentary they are producing as part of the ZO’s 50th anniversary celebrations this year.
The documentary is being filmed by Richards Bay production crew Guevara Communications, and will be released to coincide with the company’s half-century celebrations in April.
It will include interviews with founder of the Zululand Observer and DICE (Do I Care Enough?), newspaper doyenne Reg Anthony, as well as her son Gavin (ZO Managing Director) and grandson Lee (ZO Business Manager).

It will also give a behind the scenes look at the running of the company, from the printing presses through to the production of their publications, the flagship being the Zululand Observer Weekender Edition, which has kept the greater Zululand community in the know since it was first compiled on a table in Mrs Anthony’s kitchen in 1969.
Over the past 50 years it has become one of the most respected community news publications in the country, collecting many national awards.
‘I started the ZO at my kitchen table, cutting and pasting articles and chasing fire engines in my little VW Beetle. Today it has a massive online presence and circulates thousands of copies each week,’ said Mrs Anthony.
The Zululand Observer will also mark its anniversary with a print supplement, in which local businesses that have grown alongside the company, will be showcased.
Dates and details of various birthday activities will be printed in coming editions.
