WATCH: Vital sea training ahead of Inhaca to Richards Bay yacht race

The session covered vital aspects of safety at sea, including deploying a life raft

SAFETY at sea is vital for all seafarers and Zululand Yacht Club (ZYC) members recently underwent a life raft training session ahead of the upcoming Inhaca to Richards Bay yacht race.

The session formed part of the NSRI’s training programme which the crew implement every February.

The 38-strong group of ZYC members and NSRI crew first learnt the theory of sea safety, which included when to call a mayday, when a vessel should be abandoned and how to survive at sea in a life raft.

The practical session was carried out aboard the yacht Amber. Two life rafts were prepared and the NSRI rescue craft and crew were readied.

NSRI instructors conducted a full abandon ship drill, whereby the yacht crews were taken through the motions of preparing to abandon ship, and launching and entering the life raft.

The crews had to capsize and right the life rafts, climb on board so they would know how to do so should the life raft capsize while being deployed or in high seas.

The training session was appreciated by all, and ZYC members setting sail for Mozambique later this month said they had gained a lot more knowledge on how to handle a crisis at sea.
