National and Provincial elections confirmed for 8 May

This is according to the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) following the announcement by President Cyril Ramaphosa on Thursday that the national and provincial elections will be held on 8 May

ELIGIBLE voters can still register to vote in the upcoming elections until the day of proclamation.

This is according to the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) following the announcement by President Cyril Ramaphosa on Thursday that the national and provincial elections will be held on 8 May.

The IEC explained that the announcement of the election date is not the same as the proclamation of it.

‘The announcement at this stage only provides a clear and certain target for final preparations by all stakeholders, including the Electoral Commission and political parties.

‘This means that voter registration can still continue during office hours at local IEC offices, usually located at municipal offices,’ the IEC said.

Registered voters can also continue to update and change their registration and provide their address details on the commission’s website.

A proclamation is a formal, legal action through the Government Gazette which triggers the start of the official election timetable and its associated electoral processes.

‘These processes include the closing of the voters’ roll, the cut-off date for the submission of lists of candidates, certification of the voters’ roll and the opening of special vote applications.

‘The president and provincial premiers are expected to proclaim the election date towards the end of this month.’

In continuing with voter registration, the IEC in the King Cetshwayo District visited the University of Zululand and Umfolozi TVET College last week to register students.

The district has 105 wards and 553 voting districts.
