Eskom to investigate electric power lines’ environmental impact concerns

The EMS for Eskom's KZNOU was early last year certified as complying with the ISO 14001:2015 standard

IN a bid to minimise the environmental impact of power lines, Eskom is calling for public comments relating to any concerns surrounding power lines throughout KZN.

Through an established Environmental Management System (EMS), the Eskom KZN Operating Unit (KZNOU) undertakes to implement all environmental assessments and environmental management programmes.

The EMS for Eskom’s KZNOU was early last year certified as complying with the ISO 14001:2015 standard.

This is an international environmental standard, which is the benchmark for good environmental governance and management.

This standard provides a framework that an organisation such as KZNOU can follow to manage all its environmental aspects effectively.

Significant environmental aspects of the construction, maintenance and operation of Eskom power lines include the cutting of indigenous and protected trees and plants, bird and animal injuries or mortalities, land, water and noise pollution, damage to heritage resources such as graves, fossils or monuments, and soil erosion.

The KZNOU also offers environmental training and awareness to all its employees, and investigates all environmental incidents caused by its activities.

Members of the public are asked to submit any environmental concerns relating to the construction, maintenance and operation of power lines throughout KZN.

Comments can be sent to kznenv@eskom.co.za or by calling 031 7105159 to register specific environmental issues.
