Possible rabies case in Port Durnford

A CHILD has been scratched by a suspected rabid dog in the Port Durnford area.

Whether the dog was rabid or not will only be confirmed when results are made known next week.

As a precaution the child’s parents have been asked to go to a clinic for immediate assessment and a course of four preventative injections.

This is a reminder that rabies treatment should be started without delay and considered an emergency.

Scratches can also cause rabies transmission if the skin is broken.

Rabid animals often salivate on their paws, leaving plenty of rabies virus on the claws which can then be transferred by a scratch.
