THERE are so many products out there to make our nails look nice, but it’s important to also nourish them from the inside.
You can have great nails by simply adding a few key foods to your diet:
• Protein – To produce keratin (the substance that nails are made of), your body needs amino acids, which you get from eating protein. The best sources of protein are meat, dairy, nuts, beans and egg yolks.
• Zinc – Your nails need plenty of zinc in order to grow strongly. A great source of zinc is seafood, but you can also get it from eating spinach, legumes, peas and whole grains.
• Calcium – Our bones and teeth are not the only parts that benefit from calcium. Make sure you eat plenty of dairy products, leafy greens, as well as Vitamin D rich foods (fatty fish, cheese, egg yolks), which help the body to absorb calcium.
• Magnesium – Brittle nails and thinning hair are tell-tale signs that your body needs more magnesium. Pumpkin seeds, dark chocolate, avocado pears and bananas are your best friends when it comes to getting in enough magnesium.
• Biotin – Also called vitamin H, doctors prescribe it to sufferers of alopecia, an autoimmune disorder marked by hair loss. Bananas are rich in biotin, as are peanuts and lentils.
• Omega-3 Fatty Acids – This is the one type of oil your nails and hair crave for! Load up on salmon, tuna, mackerel and sardines, or walnuts, flaxseed and eggs to get a sufficient daily dose.
