IFP wants Ramaphosa to intervene in mortuary strike

Mortuary workers demand wage increase

THE IFP in KZN has called for the intervention of President Cyril Ramaphosa in the ongoing KZN mortuary strike, which is affecting many families.

The party’s provincial spokesperson on health, Ncamisile Nkwanyana, said workers have been on a go slow for two weeks, demanding a wage increase and better working conditions.

‘The IFP expects KZN Premier Willies Mchunu to break his silence on the situation unfolding in the province and speak out against the actions of the KZN Department of Health.

‘We call on the President to intervene. It is unacceptable for family members to wait for the bodies of their deceased relatives.

‘The President must do this under his Thuma Mina campaign aimed at improving service delivery,’ Nkwanyana said.

‘We urge him to fulfil this promise. It is blatantly clear that the Department of Health has failed to deal with and remedy the situation, as it is not for the first time that mortuary workers have gone on strike.

‘This is a sign of the lack of political will and respect for the dignity of those who have passed on.’
