Revamped classrooms for Khula school
The school receives minimal government funding and relies on private sector sponsorship
LEARNERS at Silethukhukanya High School in Khula Village can now sit in class without being disturbed by the elements after a local company repaired the classrooms’ doors and windows.
Relying on help from local businesses, charity organisations and corporates, the school on the outskirts of St Lucia receives minimal funding from the Department of Education and finds it impossible to undertake much-needed maintenance.
As part of its Corporate Social Investment (CSI) for 2018, Siyawisa, a company contracted to Mondi, took on the project.
‘This makes a big difference at the school and for the learners,’ said school Principal Simon Madela.
‘We are very grateful for what Siyawisa has done for us.’
The project, which included the repairing of classroom doors, windows and ventilators, was valued at R42 000.
From next year, Siyawisa plans to sponsor university bursaries for eight learners who wish to study mechanical or electrical engineering.
If the required matric marks are achieved and the learners have been accepted into university, the company will fund their studies to degree level.
The students will spend their holidays interning at Siyawisa and will then be taken on as employees once qualified.
