Mtubatuba crèche owners protest over reduced grants

The group of hundreds marched to the department's local offices to hand over a memorandum of grievances, in which they demanded an explanation for a reduction in crèche support grants

CRÈCHE founders and caregivers took to Mtubatuba’s streets earlier this month, accusing the Department of Social Development (DSD) of ‘sabotage’.

The group of hundreds marched to the department’s local offices to hand over a memorandum of grievances, in which they demanded an explanation for a reduction in crèche support grants.

This, they said, has a negative impact in the running of their institutions.

Protest convener Fanele Nyawo accused the department of undermining them, saying they have been neglected for too long.

‘The grant reduction is hitting us hard. We have lost most of our teachers, as there is no money to pay them.

‘This has also placed an extra burden on parents who do not have enough money to buy food for their children.

‘Last month we arranged a meeting with DSD officials, who promised to attend, but failed to show up.

‘That’s why we have embarked on this demonstration, to draw the attention of MEC Weziwe Thusi.’

Attempts to obtain comment from the department’s spokesperson were unsuccessful.
