Best construction award for Hluhluwe road
The award was based on the job creation of the project
THE recent upgrading of a road that links Hluhluwe and Mkhuze with the N2, was the reason the KZN Department of Transport (DoT) won the top award at the 3rd annual KZN Expanded Public Works (EPWP) Kamoso Awards ceremony.
The project, which falls under the Hluhluwe Cost Centre, was a massive undertaking of R9-million and earned the DoT the Best Construction Project award.
Commencing in December 2016, the upgrade of access road L2852 (Mahlokohloko Road) used labour intensive construction methodologies, replacing machinery to accomplish the upgrade of the 1.3km steep road from gravel to concrete.
The project created 150 job opportunities and the EPWP participants were employed from the local community.
The objectives of the awards ceremony was to showcase progress, and the impact and successes of the EPWP as a key government programme by rewarding best performing public bodies who work tirelessly and push boundaries to implement and excel in achieving EPWP performance targets.
KZN MEC for Human Settlements and Public Works, Ravi Pillay, presented the awards, encouraging officials to continue raising the bar in the implementation of EPWP because the EPWP is a vehicle for service delivery and gives hope to the poor.
