Bernina assists Thuthukani pupils with sewing skills

THE compassion of the Zululand community has again reached out to children with special needs.

One of the Thuthukani Special School Skills Development groups is a class where annually, six pupils with intellectual disabilities are taught how to sew.

This is part of a programme sponsored by the Rotary Club of Empangeni, the philosophy of which is that by teaching a pupil to sew and by equipping them with a quality sewing machine, they will be able to return home with a skill that can be used to support a family and community.

For the past six years, Bernina Zululand have been the supplier of choice for the sewing machines purchased for the pupils, and the current Bernina agent, Elsje Pretorius, has been a firm supporter of the programme, by assisting Thuthukani with examinations and training of sewing instructors.

Bernina RSA and Elsje Pretorius donated an overlocker to the programme, as she felt the need to expose the pupils to more sewing options during their year in the Skills Programme.
