Richards Bay FC fight back for a point

They maintained their unbeaten home record and remain just five points off log leaders Stellenbosch after eight matches

TWICE coming back to level matters after conceding goals, Richards Bay FC showed plenty of character in their 2-2 KZN derby draw with Uthongathi at the uMhlathuze Stadium on Sunday.

In doing so, they maintained their unbeaten home record and remain just five points off log leaders Stellenbosch after eight matches.

But head coach Brandon Truter will not be pleased at the way two soft goals were conceded, the first following a slip on the soggy field that left visiting striker Tsepho Liphoko easily able to round Xolani Ngcobo in the NRB goals with no covering defender in sight.

The second goal was also a defensive glitch with Francis Boloyi left unmarked at the far post for a simple header home.

Uthongathi keeper Abram Ngcobo managed to punch the ball clear to frustrate three awaiting NRB players

The two goals did not reflect the outstanding job done by the NRB captain in the home side’s goals. He pulled off a number of excellent saves that kept his side in the hunt.

As it was, a superb first half header by Mpho Erasmus from a superb cross by Paseka Sekese and a late strike by Mike Gumede after some excellent ball control ensured the valuable point in the see-saw contest.

Mike Gumede is clearly brought down by Siphamandla Mtolo, who is far too late with his sliding challenge in the visitors’ penalty area…but the referee strangely books the NRB striker for diving

These two sides will both be near the top of the table come the final sprint; both play a super passing game and create many chances.
