Cash truck rolls in Richards Bay

The cause of the accident is under police investigation

AN accident involving a cash-in-transit truck on Friday in Meerensee was the subject of much speculation as onlookers questioned whether it was an attempted heist or merely an accident.

According to a representative of Fidelity whose vehicle was involved, it was indeed an accident, caused by a motorist presumed to be speeding on Angler’s Rod.

While the official cause of the accident is under police investigation, witnesses said the cash truck was crossing Angler’s Rod from Marlin Mall towards Meerensee Mall at the Post Office intersection when it was side-swiped by a VW Polo.

The Polo was a complete write-off after the impact, which saw the cash truck come to a halt on its side.

No one was seriously injured.

SAPS Flying Squad and the K9 Unit attended the scene, as did City of uMhlathuze Fire and Rescue, and traffic police.

The road was closed for more than an hour, but reopened once the vehicles had been removed from the scene.
