NSRI Spring Tide Alert

Take extreme caution when visiting the coastline

THE NSRI is urging the public to take serious caution all along the coastline, owing to the Spring Tide effect that has now started leading towards the peak of the full moon Spring Tide on Tuesday (9 October).

This alert lasts from now to 14 October.

The full moon Spring Tide brings a higher than normal high tide, a lower than normal low tide and stronger than normal rip currents, which occur constantly at changing locations around the coast daily.

Anglers fishing along the coastline, bathers, beach walkers and coastal hikers are urged to be cautious.

‘The main concern is that this full moon Spring Tide has started to build in intensity and is going to peak on the day school learners return to their classrooms on 9 October,’ sain an NSRI spokesperson.

‘Therefore this weekend combined with the warm weather will see a lot more people visiting the coast, and with a growing in intensity in the Spring Tide, extreme caution is urged.’
