ONE might think South African motorists have many road regulations to follow, but spare a thought for drivers in other countries who have some weird rules to consider:
• In Britain a law still states that all Hackney carriages must carry a bale of hay and a bag of oats with them at all times.
• All Danish drivers, before they can start their cars, have to check under the car to see if there is a person underneath.
• Eating or drinking anything while driving in Cyprus is illegal. Even water.
• In Luxembourg, all cars must have windshield wipers, even if they do not have a windshield.
• In Russia, you will be fined for having a dirty car.
• In Germany it is illegal to run out of fuel on the Autobahn.
• In Spain, you must have an extra pair of glasses in the car at all times, even if you are already wearing a pair.
• In some cities cars must be parked on the side of the road where the houses bear uneven numbers on uneven days of the month.
• In Scandinavia it is illegal to drive without headlights, even in daylight.
• Estonian drivers must carry two wheel chocks with them at all times. These are wooden blocks to be positioned under the vehicle’s wheels.
• In Turkey it is all about safety. Drivers must carry a fire extinguisher, a reflective triangle and first-aid kit. Failure to do so may result in a fine.
• Motorists in France must carry a breathalyser kit. If you do not show the gendarme your kit when asked, you will get a fine.
• All cars in Serbia must have a tow bar and a three-metre tow rope.
• In Manila, you are not allowed to drive on Mondays if your number plate ends with 1 or 2.
• In Japan, plashing a pedestrian with rainwater while passing by will earn you a fine.
• It’s against the law in Singapore for a driver to come within 50m of a pedestrian.
