When the grandchildren come to visit

Accept that your life will be temporarily disrupted, your home will get messy and your rules will have to be bent

A visit from your grandchildren is something to look forward to, but the truth is, it can also be exhausting.

Preparation is the key.

Accept that your life will be temporarily disrupted, your home will get messy and your rules will have to be bent or even broken.

Put your normal routine aside and be flexible. You cannot expect your young guests to have supper before dusk or join you and your friends for a game of Canasta.

Children are energetic and demanding by nature – rest before their arrival.

Put away your breakables, valuables and medication.

Comb the house for small items that a child could swallow, such as coins or paper clips or toys with small pieces.

Children generally do not drink rooibos tea. Do shopping in advance for their favourite drinks, snacks and foods.

Stock up on crayons, scrap paper and a few books and toys. Create a space where they can play and do projects.

Most of all, remember to have fun!
