Gingindlovu cash-in-transit accused sentenced to 25 years

Mdluli was convicted for robbery and ten counts of attempted murder

A CASH-IN-TRANSIT robbery accused was yesterday handed down a hefty sentence in the Pietermaritzburg High Court.

According to the Hawks, Nicholas Mkhanyiseni Mdluli (50) was convicted and sentenced to 25 years imprisonment for a cash-in-transit heist in the Gingindlovu area.

On 20 October 2014, Mdluli and his accomplices attacked security guards who were transporting cash.

They fired shots at the vehicle until it stopped and then poured petrol over the vehicle, threatening to burn it and ordered the security guards to come out.

They robbed them off their firearms and made off with an undisclosed amount of cash.

Police swiftly responded and a shoot-out ensued, after which Mdluli was arrested.

A second accused, Salakuliwa Welcome Msimango (48) was arrested later. He was found in possession of three unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

Msimango was found guilty for possession of unlicensed firearms and sentenced to eight years imprisonment.
