Reaching out to address social ills

Rolling out a series of monthly sessions, Michael will be sharing information and resources on how to address issues of domestic violence, physical and drug abuse, relationships and other social ills at various venues across Zululand

DOMESTIC violence, crimes against women and children and families in distress continue to plague communities, and Richards Bay activist Michelle Michael of ‘Metamorphosis – It’s a Process’ project is reaching out to communities to offer help.

Rolling out a series of monthly sessions, Michael will be sharing information and resources on how to address issues of domestic violence, physical and drug abuse, relationships and other social ills at various venues across Zululand.

The first engagement session last Saturday afternoon in Aquadene attracted a group of committed community volunteers who offered their support to promote the initiative.

As a domestic violence survivor and member of the South African Police Services, Michael established the Metamorphosis organisation several years ago and hosts annual conferences, workshops and speaking engagements to share her experience and provide tools to help others deal with life’s challenges.

‘These sessions provide a platform for communities to join forces, share ideas and create unity in addressing social ills in our society.

‘Our vision is to share information that is readily available at grassroots level and encourage people to make informed decisions to change their circumstances.

‘As a single mother I understand the challenges many single parents face and would like to start a support group to help them as well.

‘Many of us are involved in community work or different projects and I’m calling on a united effort to help fight the social problems.

‘In our sessions we invite professionals from different fields to share their expertise free of charge.

The next session will be held on 29 September at the Aquadene Library (3pm).
