Taxi operators, teachers agree to work together
The agreement ends confrontation between the taxi operators and teachers who have been using lift clubs as their mode of transport
MTUBATUBA Taxi Owners Local and Long Distance Association, together with teacher representatives, have reached an agreement to allow teachers to use lift clubs and staff transport when they go to work.
The agreement ends confrontation between the taxi operators and teachers who have been using lift clubs as their mode of transport, however, the association warned those transporting teachers to refrain from stealing commuters from the taxi ranks and along the road, after dropping off teachers at schools.
Siphelele Mbatha, spokesperson for the association said they understood that teachers play a pivotal role when it comes to moulding, uplifting and shaping future leaders in different spheres of the society including their taxi industry.
‘The tension that erupted and surfaced between educators and taxi operators in our area, created havoc and a tense situation. It was a sour and unacceptable relationship.
‘We believe that working together we will move the transport industry to the next level. We have so many taxis parked at the rank waiting for their turns and when motorists steal our customers, it is like taking bread out of our mouths.
‘We also urge people not to hitchhike, as this poses a threat to their lives,’ said Mbatha.
