Arrested eSikhaleni protesters released
Charges against eSikhaleni residents were dropped in court this morning
CRIMINAL charges against 13 eSikhaleni residents arrested yesterday during community protest action have been dropped.
They were released earlier today after they appeared in the eSikhawini Magistrate’s Court.
Residents were initially charged with public violence after their march about rates increases and service delivery issues turned violent.
Residents had planned to deliver a memorandum to the uMhlathuze mayor, but the gathering was deemed illegal.
Police dispersed the crowd using rubber bullets and arrested some community members.

Following the arrests, angry residents toppled municipal skips, damaged an electricity box and blockaded roads with stones and burning tyres.
‘We are happy that the magistrate saw this as just intimidating tactics by the police.
‘We still demand answers from our leaders regarding the issues,’ Golekane Movement leader Chico Langa said.
According to him, another community march will be held next Thursday, 27 September.
