BREAKING: Mtubatuba taxi driver dies in hail of bullets

The shooting is not thought to be mine-related

KWAMSANE police near Mtubatuba are on the hunt for a grey BMW with a Durban registration number after the fatal shooting of a taxi driver outside the gate of Somkhele mine earlier today (Monday).

The shooting occurred at about 5.30am when the taxi driver was being scanned at the gate prior to dropping off passengers working at the mine.

According to KwaMsane SAPS Communications Officer, Captain Jabulani Mdletshe, the security guard was conducting the regulatory scanning, including a breathalyser test, when the suspect approached the taxi driver, pointed a firearm at him and shot him multiple times.

He died on the scene.

A mine employee who was a passenger in the taxi was taken to Hlabisa Hospital after suffering a bullet wound to the hip.

KwaMsane SAPS has opened murder and attempted murder cases, and appeals to members of the public to come forward should they have any relevant information.
