It’s never too late to embrace technology – here’s how to make it work for you
Did you know that your smart phone can 'read' your text out loud if you are visually impaired? That's just one great way to make tech work for you in your golden years
‘User-friendly’ is the buzz word when it comes to modern technology, so there really is no need to be wary of a smartphone or computer.
These nifty devices allow you to instantly connect with anyone around the world.
At the touch of a button, you have access to any information on just about any topic you can think of!
Ask your children – or better yet, your grandkids – to show you how to operate your phone, and it will open a whole new world for you.
You can adjust your device to suit your needs, for the visually impaired? Increase the text size.
Hearing impaired? There are settings on most smart phones that will ‘read’ your text to you.
To make the learning experience easier in the beginning, alleviate your anxiety by writing a short list of the steps to take to get to your ‘destination’, whether it’s sending an email, or creating a voice note.
(Voice notes, by the way, are a great way to make notes to yourself, create shopping lists and do a host of tasks without using your hands or fumbling with text on a small keyboard.)
Be patient and take your time to master your phone or computer.
Remember the importance on online security, and keep in mind that banking and passwords should be given extra precaution.
Never share too much detailed personal information such as your physical address, banking details or ID number, online.
Be smart: look out for tricksters and scams and don’t visit dodgy websites – same as in real life!
