VARIOUS Mtubatuba schools participated in a recent debate hosted by Mtubatuba SAPS.
The aim of the competition was to help learners realise that the police do have their best interests at heart, and that they want to work closely with the communities in maintaining law and order.
For the first round, the learners had to prepare an argument about whether or not they think marijuana should be legalised, and for the second round, what they would implement if they were station commander.
Mtubatuba Christian School, Mtubatuba High School, Kingdom Christian College, Vezobala High School and Silethukhukanya High School all participated.
Winners of both rounds then went head-to-head to compete for the Junior Cluster Commander and the Junior Station Commander titles.
Ultimately, Mtubatuba SAPS will implement the good ideas brought forth by the learners.
Amahle Mapanga of Mtubatuba Christian School won the Junior Station Commander title for her argument on what she would implement if she was station commander.
She said she would form partnerships between SAPS and citizens, and groups such as Neighbourhood Watch, to communicate and educate about crime awareness.
She also said she would observe the policing areas and demarcate manageable sectors.
School campaigns about crime awareness, and building play/skate parks for the youth would be some ways she would help keep the youth off the streets and away from substance abuse.
The winner of the Junior Cluster Commander title was Nosipho Ngobese of Nkombose High School for her argument against the legalisation of marijuana.
‘There are many unpleasant side-effects, including negative health effects, and it is addictive,’ she said.
‘Mental disturbances caused by excessive use of marijuana cause the person to be a burden on the state.
‘If it is legalised, the youth will openly smoke it, they will become addicted and resort to crime in order to raise money to buy more.’
